Services to the Coach Industry
Gold Award Winner
Ian Luckett, Lucketts Travel
This award is presented every year by the event organisers to somebody in the world of coaching who has devoted a lifetime to the industry, and delivered exceptional service. The award is designed to recognise a significant and sustained contribution to the success of the industry by an individual who has gone consistently beyond the call of normal duty to improve and promote the coach industry for its users or the wider community.
Our award this year goes to somebody who has spent some 33 years in the coach industry, joining his family firm as long ago as 1985. As well as overseeing a tenfold expansion in the size of the coach business, our recipient has served the wider industry extensively over a number of years through CPT and other industry bodies.
Ian Luckett joined his family's coach and haulage business in 1985 after spells at college and as a freight forwarder at Portsmouth Ferry Port .
As with many people joining a small family coach business, he started in the offices learning all aspects of the roles required in the industry, including driving.
By 2017 the business had grown from a fleet of ten in 1983 to over 120 vehicles with an annual turnover exceeding £21m. Two further acquisitions have taken the fleet size of the group to over 170, with brands including Coliseum Coaches, Mortons Travel, Solent Coaches and Worthing Coaches.
Ian now runs the business with his brother Steve, with the day to day management and operation of the Group’s companies left in the very capable hands of its senior management team. Ian is a past chairman of the Confederation of Passenger Transport, and enjoyed a highly successful year as CPT president in 2017.
